パターン①

メキシコの田舎町。海岸に小さなボートが停泊していた。
メキシコ人の漁師が小さな網に魚をとってきた。
その魚はなんとも生きがいい。
それを見たアメリカ人旅行者は、
「すばらしい魚だね。どれくらいの時間、漁をしていたの」と尋ねた。
すると漁師は 「そんなに長い時間じゃないよ」と答えた。
すると漁師は 「そんなに長い時間じゃないよ」と答えた。
旅行者が 「もっと漁をしていたら、もっと魚が獲れたんだろうね。おしいなあ」
と言うと、漁師は、自分と自分の家族が食べるにはこれで十分だと言った。
「それじゃあ、あまった時間でいったい何をするの」と旅行者が聞くと、
漁師は、「日が高くなるまでゆっくり寝て、それから漁に出る。戻ってきたら子どもと遊んで、女房とシエスタして。
夜になったら友達と一杯やって、ギターを弾いて、歌をうたって…ああ、これでもう一日終わりだね」
すると旅行者はまじめな顔で漁師に向かってこう言った。
「ハーバード・ビジネス・スクールでＭＢＡを取得した人間として、きみにアドバイスしよう。いいかい、きみは毎日、もっと長い時間、漁をするべきだ。それであまった魚は売る。お金が貯まったら大きな漁船を買う。 そうすると漁獲高は上がり、儲けも増える。その儲けで漁船を２隻、３隻と増やしていくんだ。やがて大漁船団ができるまでね。 そうしたら仲介人に魚を売るのはやめだ。自前の水産品加工工場を建てて、そこに魚を入れる。その頃にはきみはこのちっぽけな村を出てメキソコシティに引っ越し、ロサンゼルス、ニューヨークへと進出していくだろう。きみはマンハッタンのオフィスビルから企業の指揮をとるんだ」
漁師は尋ねた。 「そうなるまでにどれくらいかかるのかね」
「二〇年、いやおそらく二五年でそこまでいくね」
「それからどうなるの」
「それから？ そのときは本当にすごいことになるよ」 と旅行者はにんまりと笑い、
「今度は株を売却して、きみは億万長者になるのさ」
「それで？」
「そうしたら引退して、海岸近くの小さな村に住んで、日が高くなるまでゆっくり寝て、日中は釣りをしたり、子どもと遊んだり、奥さんとシエスタして過ごして、夜になったら友達と一杯やって、ギターを弾いて、歌をうたって過ごすんだ。どうだい。すばらしいだろう」

一人のアメリカ人ビジネスマンが、メキシコの小さな漁村の海辺で海を眺めていた。そのとき、たった一人の漁師を乗せた船が沖から帰ってきた。小さな船の中に、数匹のマグロが横たわっていた。
アメリカ人 「いい魚釣れたんですね。どのくらい時間かかりましたか」
メキシコ人 「ほとんどかかってないですよ」
アメリカ人 「じゃ、何でもっと時間をかけて、もっと多くの魚を捕ってこないんですか」
メキシコ人 「もう家族を養うのに十分だからだ」
アメリカ人 「しかし、一日の残りの時間はどう費やしているんですか」
メキシコ人 「まあ、朝ゆっくりと寝て、少し釣りをやって、妻のマリアとシエスタをとって、そして夕方になると村の広場に行って、アミーゴたちとワインを飲んだり、ギターを弾いたりするよ。とても忙しくて、充実した生活を送っています。セニョール」
アメリカ人 「（少しあきれて）私はハーバードのＭＢＡを取っているんだ。あなたのためにアドバイスをしよう。もっと釣りに時間をかけて、多くの魚をとって、余ったお金でもっと大きな漁船を買うといい。そのうち、何隻も買えるよ。それと、魚は仲買人に売らないで、直接メーカーに売るといいよ。やがては自分で工場を開く。そうすると、製品も、流通も、加工もすべてコントロールできる。そうなったらこの小さな漁村からメキシコ・シティへ、やがてはニューヨークへ引っ越して、拡大し続けるグローバルな事業を展開するようになる。いいだろう！」
メキシコ人 「しかし、セニョール、そこまで何年かかるんですか？」
アメリカ人 「まあ、15～20年でできるよ」
メキシコ人 「それからどうするんですか」
アメリカ人 「（ほほえみながら）そこからが本番だ。株を上場させて、一夜にして億万長者になるんだよ、ハハハ」
メキシコ人 「億万長者ですか。そんなにお金があって、どうなるんですか」
アメリカ人 「それは、ねえ。リタイアして、メキシコの小さな漁村に引っ越して、朝ゆっくり寝て、少し釣りをやって、奥さんとシエスタをとって、そして夕方になると村の広場に行って、アミーゴたちとワインを飲んだり、ギターを弾いたりすればいいんだよ」

パターン① Harvard MBA Advice
A boat docked in a tiny Mexican village. An American tourist complimented the Mexican fisherman on the quality of his fish and asked how long it took him to catch them.
"Not very long," answered the Mexican.
"But then, why didn't you stay out longer and catch more?" asked the American.
The Mexican fisherman explained that his small catch was sufficient to meet his needs and those of his family.
The American asked, "But what do you do with the rest of your time?"
"I sleep late, fish a little, play with my children, and take a siesta with my wife. In the evenings, I go into the village to see my friends, have a few drinks, play the guitar, and sing a few songs...I have a full life."
The American interrupted, "I have an MBA from Harvard and I can help you! You should start by fishing longer every day. You can then sell the extra fish you catch. With the extra revenue, you can buy a bigger boat. With the extra money the larger boat will bring, you can buy a second one and a third one and so on until you have an entire fleet of trawlers. Instead of selling your fish to a middle man, you can negotiate directly with the processing plants and maybe even open your own plant. You can then leave this little village and move to Mexico City, Los Angeles, or even New York City. From there you can direct your huge enterprise."
"How long would that take?" asked the Mexican.
"Twenty, perhaps twenty-five years," replied the American.
"And after that?"
"Afterwards? That's when it gets really interesting," answered the American, laughing. "When your business gets really big, you can start selling stocks and make millions!"
"Millions? Really? And after that?"
"After that, you'll be able to retire, live in a tiny village near the coast, sleep late, play with your children, catch a few fish, take a siesta with your wife, and spend your evenings having a few drinks and enjoy your friends."
パターン② Harvard Business Plan Joke
An American consultant was at the pier of a small coastal Mexican village when a small boat with just one fisherman docked. Inside the small boat were several large yellowfin tuna. The American complimented the Mexican on the quality of his fish and asked how long it took to catch them.
The Mexican replied, “Only a little while.”
The American then asked, “Why don’t you stay out longer and catch more fish?
The Mexican said, “Well, I catch enough to feed my family.”
The American then asked, “But what do you do with the rest of your time?”
The Mexican fisherman said, “I sleep late, fish a little, play with my children, take siesta with my wife, Maria, stroll into the village each evening where I sip wine and play guitar with my amigos, I have a full and busy life, senor.”
The American scoffed, “I am a Harvard graduate and could help you with a new Business Plan. You should spend more time fishing and with the proceeds, buy a bigger boat with the proceeds from the bigger boat you could buy several boats eventually you would have a fleet of fishing boats. Instead of selling your catch to a middleman you would sell directly to the processor, eventually opening your own cannery. You would control the product, processing and distribution. You would need to leave this small coastal fishing village and move to Mexico City, then LA and eventually NYC where you will run your expanding enterprise.”
The Mexican fisherman asked, “But senor, how long will this all take?”
To which the American replied, “15-20 years to realise the business plan.”
“But what then, senor?”
The American laughed and said, “That’s the best part. When the time is right you would announce an IPO and sell your company stock to the public and become very rich, you would make millions.”
“Millions, senor? Then what?”
The American said, “Then you would retire. Move to a small coastal fishing village where you would sleep late, fish a little, play with your kids, take siesta with your wife, stroll to the village in the evenings where you could sip wine and play your guitar with your amigos.”
